This has got to be the best kept secret in the Monterey Bay. Located in Pacific Grove, and off the beaten path in Caledonia park, Stillwell’s Snow in the Park must be seen to be believed.
The event starts early when the snow machine shows up and covers a basketball court with a ten foot high pile of snow. They then blow another huge pile for the giant snowman.
Then they set up a petting zoo, some jump houses, the horse carriage rides, and maybe some pony rides.
Oh and it’s all FREE. Yep, that’s not a typo. Even the parking is free because it’s in a neighborhood.
Now this is just the stuff in the park. In the recreation center across the street they set up a little kiddie carnival. The games cost like fifty cents each to play and every child wins a price. They have super cheap homemade baked good and candies for sale, a pretty darn good and affordable lunch menu and face painting by some real pros. The face painting costs the most but it this is the real deal.
To top it off they have a Secret Santa type room. Parents send their kids in with an official chaperon and some money ( $5 to $10 per child is plenty) so they can shop in privacy for their parents. After they are done, they wrap the presents and send the kids out the other side. This is a really great activity for kids in the preschool to third grade range.
My partner warned me not to post this on my blog as we only tell our closest friends about this under-the-radar event. Ooops, too late.
